Dark Lilith was so relieved to hear that neither one of the brothers blamed her after all! Even Dominic would have helped her all over again!
She smiled, enjoying the physical contact.
Drugs? Her?
Dark Lilith chuckled, feeling slightly better. "You're kidding me, right?" "I finally get an allowance after 13 years and you think I'd waste my money on that?" "My knitting materials are expensive enough."
She moved forward and let the subject about her change in behavior drop. She really didn't want to admit to anything else. Confession wasn't as difficult for her as it was for normal Lilith but admitting how nuts, self-centered, and sadistic she was had been quite a trial. She really believed torturing and killing her parents would have been less emotionally trying.
Besides there was something she wanted to say before he would view her completely differently. She had been so fixated on her own problems that she hadn't really been able to comment on Dominic's shell.
"I'm sorry you were bullied, Dominic. That wasn't fair. People always say bullshit things like kids are sweet, innocent, and pure but that's all nonsense. Children don't learn empathy for a while and they can be as cruel and nasty as any adult. They just don't get into as much legal trouble.
I can understand why you put up a shell. I tried to do that for years, I was just no where near as successful as you were. I'm still not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. When you're dealing with difficult people who aren't your friends or family you love, a shell can be very necessary.
But it's still not healthy to never cast off your shell. I mean breaking it really hurts but you can't ever truly be accepted if you wear it all the time. They'll just be accepting a pretend you and that won't make either of you happy.
And one day you'll just end up super frustrated, angry, and bitter. I always thought I was weak but I think people in general are weak. We're very social creatures who need genuine interactions with others. The experiences are both rewarding and painful but we're really disappointed if we can't connect with others. We aren't really capable of handling a middle ground where we just have so-so superficial relationships with everyone.
And I'm sorry for giving you this dose of scolding alone. I used to think Shawn was different from you in this way but I just couldn't see how someone could put on a realistic happy facade for so long. I never could. But he has a shell always firmly plastered on too. His shell is just harder to see." She rolled her eyes. "I can so see why you're brothers."
"Hmmm...And you two appear to be really happy with each other but I wonder if that's really true. Somehow I don't think you ever talk about what bothers you. You just intrinsically understand that you're both wearing shells and you're comforted by the fact that someone can understand that.
And you know you both love each other and so you appear to be satisfied. But are you really? Is this just a haphazard satisfaction because the two of you understand something no one else knows? You know each other's history and you can gauge each other's emotions very well but I wonder how well you can read each other's thoughts. Do you really know what Shawn is thinking? Does Shawn really understand you?"
Regular Lilith was better at reading others because she was less self absorbed but Dark Lilith felt that this talent was often wasted because she was too worried about upsetting others to really comment on their faults.

Dominic listened to her questions and paused to think about it before giving a light shrug. "Nobody is happy all of the time. We have our rough spots and sure, there is some animosity between us sometimes but that's normal." It was impossible to know and spend so much time with someone without having at least some level of competition.
"Lilith, my brother and I have known each other for twenty years. It doesn't matter if we have a habit of putting up walls. We know each other well enough that we usually have a good idea of what the other one is thinking." He shook his head and let out a short chuckle. "As for Shawn, he's lying to himself just as much as everybody else. The way that he plays things off and acts like nothing's wrong? Half the time he has himself convinced that it's the case."
He looked toward the front of the house where Shawn was waiting and hoped that he wasn't bringing too much attention to himself. "And yeah, we fight but it's normal. I know you haven't really seen it much but we argue and disagree about a lot of stuff. But that doesn't mean we don't care for each other."

And then again of course her other half wasn't necessarily correct in her guesses about others. She definitely sounded a bit off here. Dark Lilith was happy to hear about such a nice normal family relationship.
"I'm glad you two understand each other so well. I still wish you'd be more open with each other and other people." She stopped and stared Dominic firmly in the eye. "I will have you two open up to me."
"But....um...Maybe I could talk to someone, even a psychologist or therapist, if you or Shawn was there. I don't think I would be able to do it without you. You two were the ones who really saw them and...I do want to get better but I really don't think I would be okay if you weren't there. I would need someone to vouch for me and someone I knew to keep me....sane through the experience."

"We're as open as we need to be with each other. Not everybody benefits from spilling out their feelings to each other. We open up when we need to and that's enough." Things had been tense with them now and again but they always managed to work their problems out together.
Dom smiled at the idea of her going to see a therapist. "I'm glad to hear that. The two of us would be glad to help. I don't think we'd be able to get any medical records or anything but if the two of us talk to whoever you get and let them know that you're being truthful it would help." Not to mention that two of the three of them carried very real physical scars as proof.

Dark Lilith pondered his words for a moment. "Maybe I'm too open because I couldn't open up to anyone for so long. Is it annoying?"she asked nervously.
She sighed. "I can't help but want to understand you two better and help you if I can. It really is a selfish wish but I suppose there are probably more harmful desires."
She bit her lip. "And you wouldn't leave me alone with them? I...I think I would really freak out if I was alone with them."

He shook his head. "It's not annoying. I'm not really used to people opening up that much but it's not something that I can't handle." Dominic looked down and kicked at a rock, feeling awkward at the idea of opening up too much. "I can't say for sure that I'll open up and it's not anything personal. I'm just not really all that comfortable bringing up old memories to anyone. They're in the past and I'd rather keep them that way."
"And no, we wouldn't leave you alone with them until you were ready to be left. And if we can't make it because of distance or something we will find someone to go with you as a moral support."

Dark Lilith sighed in relief. She didn't want to be an annoyance any more than she wanted to be a burden.
She laughed. "You seem to handle so much so well. If I met you when I was younger I would have probably thought you were a God on Earth."
"If you come to the first couple of meetings with me I'm sure I'll be able to handle a substitute. And thanks for being willing to come. I definitely can't do it without you," she said earnestly.
She stared at the ground with a mixture of shame and guilt. "And I'm sorry for messing up your Christmas Eve but I can't apologize for coming. It...It helped me work out a few things."
She looked up and beamed at Dominic. "At least I finally got a hug from you! Best Christmas present ever!"

Dominic could not help but laugh at her comment. "I can definitely say that I am nothing like a god." His face went more serious as the conversation went on. "Yeah, we can probably swing that. Of course we'd be willing to come help. It's kind of a big deal to get you help."
He shook his head and clasped his hands behind his back. "You didn't mess up our Christmas Eve. By the time you came around it was pretty fairly ruined on its own. With Nora and Raye out of commission and Shawn being sick we weren't in much of a celebrating mood. Besides, my troupe was doing a bunch of Christmas showings so I wasn't in a partying state." Not that it was often he felt up to partying.
Dom slid his cell phone out of his pocket to check the time before looking up to the front of the house. "Come on, it's getting late. We should take the long way around." He glanced to the front again before guiding her off to the side.

Her eyes shined with gratitude when Dominic mentioned that it was a big deal to get her help so they would probably be able to attend her first few sessions.
She couldn't believe Dominic was being so nice. Although she also understood he was being honest. He wasn't the type to sugarcoat things. If he said that she hadn't ruined Christmas Eve, she hadn't ruined Christmas Eve. She wasn't happy that they hadn't had a good time but she supposed given the circumstances, it couldn't be helped.
Lilith sighed when Dominic mentioned walking all the way back around the house. She had been running around all day. She had fled the library when Dominic saw her. And he was pretty fast so she needed to move quickly. Then she had to find a temporary hiding place before walking all the way here. And now she had to head back again with a heavy backpack she was struggling to carry.
But she didn't grumble and simply nodded. She was so tired that the reason for the tactical retreat didn't occur to her for a moment. When it did she stopped moving long enough to dig out her phone and dial Shawn's number.
"We should warn Shawn that we're safe and leaving but that he should head out before my parents come home," she whispered while it was ringing. Dark Lilith had forgotten to put her phone on vibrate so it was ringing for anyone nearby to hear. She cursed herself for her stupidity but as far as she could tell, no one was here yet so it wasn't an issue. Besides, it wasn't that loud.
As Shawn's phone began to ring two familiar figures approached the front of their home. Mrs. Tsuksa could be seen with a glittering jasmine dress. Mr. Tsukasa was wearing his usual blue jeans and a sweat shirt, wine bottle clenched firmly in his fist.
Mrs. Tsukasa stepped forward to unlock the door but Mr. Tsukasa held up a hand to stop her. He had heard what he believed to be voices very near his house. Suspicious, he ran towards the direction they were coming from. His wife followed behind him but she was no where near as fast in high heels.

On hearing Lilith's father starting to approach, Dominic grabbed her from behind and put a hand over her mouth so that she wouldn't be able to make any noises at the sudden yank. He picked her up off of her feet and slid back along the shadows toward the back of the house. "Shh, lets get out of here."
As Shawn felt his phone vibrating he slid it out of his pocket and looked down to see who was calling. When he saw that it was Lilith he quickly answered it but heard nothing but silence. "Hello? Lilith are you there?" He hung up after a few seconds and looked down toward her house to see that her parents had arrived home. "Shit." He jogged down the sidewalk until he was a house down from theirs before cutting back through their neighbor's yard and running for Lilith's back yard.
As Mr. Tsukasa rounded the corner he would see a young man with dark hair and blue eyes wearing an old leather jacket whistling and clapping his hands while leaning down and looking around. "Here boy! Come here Cujo!" He looked up at the man whose path he was blocking and got to his feet. "Hey, did you see a chocolate lab puppy running through here? I've been looking for him all night."

At first Dark Lilith was confused. Why in the world would Dominic grab her like that? She needed to warn Shawn...The loud footprints finally cued her in as Dominic started dragging her away.
Her parents..They were really coming for her?! She tried to remind herself that she was the dark half, far more capable of dealing with them than regular Lilith. She couldn't panic. But there was nothing she could do to comfort herself. She was still Lilith, sharing all of the memories and all of the conditioning.
She screamed in pure horror and fear and she began to tremble violently. There were items in her backpack that might help but she wasn't coherent enough to think about that. She was in a state of perfect terror and helplessness. It was like she had never left home. It was a normal night and her parents had returned to hurt her.
Dominic had grabbed Lilith and run too quickly for Mr. Tsukasa to catch sight of them. However, he would recognize the sounds of his daughter's screams anywhere. He had listened to them frequently for the past 13 years.
He was very confused as to the reason why she had returned but he didn't deny that this was a golden opportunity for him. He could finally eliminate one of the ghosts that were haunting his closet.
Excited by the thought of his good fortune, he paid little attention to the man searching for his puppy.
He didn't know if this kid was involved with his daughter and frankly he didn't care. He had more important things to worry about but in case he truly was an innocent bystander, he should keep up appearances. "I'm in a rush. Lois will help you look," he would shout while running around
Lois wouldn't be too far behind and would hear the conversation. "I'm so sorry to hear about your puppy. Of course I'd be delighted to help you search for him in my husband's place. Where did you last see him? she asked pleasantly, showing off her brilliant white teeth.
Mr. Tsukas had dodged the kid and was running incredibly fast but there was something that stunned him so much he stopped completely.
"'Shawn Cavanaugh?" he questioned dumbly. He had never expected to see that idiot again. He hadn't thought anyone would be so dumb as to show their face to the person who had nearly caused their destruction.
He reached into his loose hoody and removed a pistol he had been concealing. He had started to carry it everywhere after Shawn had first attempted to rescue Lilith. "What the hell are you doing here?" he asked, pointing the gun at his face.

"I live about two blocks down and I saw him running this way." Will glanced down and noticed Lilith's dropped cell phone. He reached down and picked it up before sliding it into his coat pocket. "Sister would kill me if I lost that." He let out a little chuckle and glanced back toward the back yard. "He's only two months old and he's wearing a red collar. His name is Cujo but I don't think he knows to answer to it yet."
Despite her freaking out, Dominic managed to keep a hold of Lilith as he stumbled his way into the woods. His footing wasn't the best and he nearly tripped a few times but he managed to stay on his feet. "Lilith, calm down. Calm down we're getting you out he's not going to hurt you." When he glanced back he felt his heart nearly double it's pace at the sight of Shawn standing between them and Lilith's father. Dom did not, however, see the gun that Mr. Tsukasa had trained on him. He tightened his grip and hoped that Will would be able to keep Shawn out of trouble.
What little color there was in Shawn's face drained away at the sight of the gun and he raised his hands up to show that he was unarmed. "I-I heard Lilith was in the neighborhood and I wanted to make sure she stayed out of trouble." The fear was evident on his face as he tried to take a step back away from Lilith's father. "I don't want any trouble." While in most situations he would try to talk or charm his way out, he was just too afraid to try.

Dark Lilith was too traumatized to comprehend Dominic's words or even to understand that he was rescuing her once again. All she could think about was the fact that her Dad might get his hands on her once more. She continued to shriek at the top of her lungs and shudder. She wasn't trying to fight against Dominic. She simply couldn't keep still.
Mrs. Tuskasa nodded. "I see. Well let's start heading this way," she said, gesturing away from the direction of her husband. She had faith in his ability to handle himself. Besides, she wasn't a fighter. She wouldn't be able to provide all that much support.
"Or perhaps you want me to call the police. We can report that your dog is missing. I'm sure they'll send out someone to help us look," she said kindly.
Mr. Tsukasa laughed harshly. "You don't want any trouble?"
"How can you expect me to believe that? You've caused nothing but trouble ever since you paid me a visit last year. Perhaps you remember," he said cruelly, pausing a moment, allotting Shawn a minute to recall the sorry state he had found himself in after the messy encounter. "And now you show up in my neighborhood and I'm just supposed to believe you aren't trying anything?"
Mr. Tsukasa sighed, realizing he had probably lost Lilith by now. Although she was obviously somewhere in California and once Shawn had been dealt with the appropriate measures could be taken to locate her.
"Shawn, you're an imbecile but I still don't want to hurt you. I just want you to accompany me to the police station. They'll just ask you some questions and if you truly are innocent they'll release you. So how about it? Will you follow me quietly?" he asked, gun fixed firmly on Shawn's face.

"Yes I would like that." Will seemed about ready to follow her when he glanced over to the back yard and noticed the gun. "Holy shit, what's going on back there?" He turned and made his way toward the back yard. "Hey man, what's going on here, how come you got that guy at gunpoint?" He gestured to Shawn.
Shawn swallowed hard as Mr. Tsukasa prompted him to remember. It was all a blur. He could vaguely recall falling down the stairs and Lilith begging for him to let go when her father had his hands wrapped around Shawn's throat. "Sorry, it's all pretty fuzzy really. Guess it was all the blood loss or the concussion but I hardly remember a thing." He shook his head when he was asked to follow and he took another step back. Shawn knew he was taking a risk but the way he saw it getting into a car with them and accompanying him to the police station was an even bigger risk. He glanced over to Will before turning his attention back to Lilith's father. "I'm going to have to respectfully decline. I'm not going anywhere with you." The way Shawn saw it, if he got into that car he was as good as dead.
Dom could feel his grip on Lilith slipping as he stumbled through the bushes on his way toward the car. Although they were making progress it was far less than he would have liked. "Lilith please calm down, we have to get out of here." He stopped walking for a moment and shifted one of his arms to slide under her legs so that her feet were no longer dragging on the ground before pushing onward.

Dark Lilith thought she heard something from a great distance. She focused hard and was able to discern Dominic's voice. She released a few deep cleansing breaths and managed to stifle her trembling.
"Sorry," she apologized, trying to piece the situation back together. Her Dad had been coming but Dominic grabbed her. She didn't hear anything so maybe she was temporarily safe.
"I'm okay," she said as much to herself as to Dominic. "I'm okay," she repeated. She couldn't believe she had lost it. She had thought she was more in control than that but perhaps she needed therapy as much as regular Lilith. In any case, feeling shame would have to wait. A clear head was required.
"Where's Shawn?!" she asked frantically. "We need to call him and make sure..." she trailed off, realizing she no longer had her phone. "Dominic you have to call and make sure he didn't run into my dad! If he did we need to go back and help him! Dad's nuts and powerful! Shawn needs support!" she yelled, steadying herself so that Dominic no longer needed to carry her.
Mrs. Tsukasa's smile faltered but only for a moment. "Oh my god! It's the guy that broke into our house last year and tried to kill us!" she yelled. "He probably wants to hurt Jamie again! We need to call the police!" she shouted, taking out her phone and hurriedly dialing the number.
"Perhaps you learned nothing because you remember so little," Mr. Tsukasa said savagely. When Shawn stepped back he cockily took a step forward, being careful to make sure he wasn't close enough for Shawn to grab the gun.
He heard his wife shout. He didn't turn towards her but kept his attention fixed on Shawn. "So if you don't feel comfortable accompanying me, how about you let my wife call the police? They'll come to you," he said with a nasty grin.

"Shawn will be fine, he's got Will with him. We need to get you out of here." Dom only hoped that what he was saying was true. But he couldn't stop to question it now. If he turned back he would only be putting Lilith in more danger. He just had to hope that Shawn and Will could handle themselves well enough to make it out of there in one piece.
Shawn froze when he cocked the gun and closed his eyes, for a second to gather up his nerves. "Are you sure you want to call the police? If this goes to court you will lose. We have a mountain of evidence that will expose every last one of your dirty little secrets. We will personally rip your cozy little empire apart piece by fucking piece until you have nothing left to show for it. So call off your dogs and let us go, or we go public with all of it. I have recorded testimony from half a dozen cops, forged police records, hospital staff, all of it. So I recommend you put the gun down." Shawn's confidence grew the longer he spoke and by the time he was done with his little speech he wore a small smirk across his face.
When Will heard Mrs. Tsukasa start to scream he turned around to face her. "That's horse shit and you know it. Shawn's never tried to kill anything in his goddamn life." He tried for the phone but she managed to yank it out of his reach. Will listened as Shawn spoke but he never took his eyes off of her. "You better listen to him. I've seen their case and it's a pretty damn solid one."

Dark Lilith wondered if the situation really was under control but she understood that her going back wouldn't help. She had been deluding herself with her plans of revenge. She wasn't very coordinated and her parents were much better fighters. The only way it would have worked was if her plan had been executed perfectly and she had been able to immobilize them first.
If she went back she could definitely trade her safety for Shawn's but Shawn wouldn't necessarily accept that. She would probably just make the situation worse, providing another potential hostage.
"Dominic, you go back. You have the gun. You can back Shawn up. It's dangerous for me to return but I can hide out here without your protection," she said firmly. However, she looked incredibly worn out. In addition to running all over the world and lugging around a heavy backpack she had experienced a fear induced fit. She looked like she could topple over at any second.
Mrs. Tsukasa stepped further away from Will but ceased dialing, waiting for her husband to give her further instructions.
Mr. Tsukasa was anxious but he gave no sign of nervousness or doubt. The most important thing was to always let others think you were in control. Never lose your composure.
He briefly wondered if it would be best to shoot Shawn and just let the cops clean up the mess. However, those damn kids had accumulated a decent amount of evidence against him. And if one of them died the others might take action. He really wanted to avoid a body.
"If you were so confident you would have filed a case despite our agreement. Lois keep dialing," he ordered.
"Don't forget that if you file charges we will claim custody of Lilith. The hearing for custody will of course take place in California. She is my daughter and I have a right to a jury of my peers. You can't do anything," he said smugly.

The smirk remained on Shawn's face. "In California yes, but do you think the hearing would take place in Sacramento? You have the right to a jury of your peers but they would have to be unbiased and with the story out there isn't a jury in the world that would give her to you. Any jury that agreed to give her back with all the evidence of abuse would be obviously in your pocket. You wouldn't be able to touch her without everyone knowing what you had done. Is it worth it? Do you want to test the strength of your connections in the court of public opinion? The second your ties hear that you're going to court against this they will drop you like a brick." His smirk grew a little bit wider. "Your custody threats may have been a deterrent before but we have too many people on our side now. You'll never see her in your care again." His eyes narrowed and he took a step forward. "The reason we never made a case before now is because Lilith was not ready to testify. But she's almost ready now. Get your lawyers ready because we're coming for you very soon. Now put the gun down before you do something you'll regret."
As Lois went to dial again, Will shot his hand out and snatched the phone away from her before hitting end and sliding the phone into his pocket. "You'll get this back soon enough." He had no intentions of giving it to her until he was sure that they were home free and safe. If nothing else he was willing to mail it back to her. "Just listen to him. You don't want another charge added to the list."
Dominic shook his head and kept moving. "Me showing up there with a gun is only going to make matters worse. I"m sure the two of them have the situation under control. And I'm not leaving you out here by yourself and there is no way in hell I'm taking you back there with me. They should be fine."

Mrs. Tsukasa paled when she heard Shawn's words. She was still pondering whether it was in her best interest to call the police when the decision was taken from her. She looked to her husband for guidance. What should she do? She could phone the police from her house but would that just worsen their situation? Damned Lilith was ruining everything again. Curse the day that wretched child was born.
Mr. Tsukasa struggled to appear calm. He still wore a smile but it was far less cocky and the edges were beginning to shift downwards.
"Lilith won't leave this state," he said tersely, refusing to lower his gun, desperately trying to sort everything out so he could save himself and his wife. If he could just get rid of the girl the others wouldn't have a reason to fight him. They would likely be too terrified to challenge his authority when no gain was present.
Dark Lilith nodded in resignation. A gun would probably just rile her dad up and cause him to act less rationally than usual. She just hated not being able to do anything.
She suddenly felt very whoozy, completely drained. Her vision blurred for one second and her backpack felt like it weighed 100 pounds. If she were standing she felt certain she would have collapsed.
"Dominic, please help me stay conscious. Please talk to me or declaim for me or something. I've never heard your acting. I'd like that," she said groggily.

"She doesn't have to. Actually, if she is going to stay in the state anyways we may as well get the charges filed then shouldn't we? No use wasting time if she's going to be staying here anyways. Maybe we'll just run down tomorrow and start filling out the paperwork." He took a small step forward, inching his way toward Lilith's father with his hands still up on his head. "Give it up, Jamie, there's nothing you can do."
Although Will was mostly keeping an eye on the two men in front of him, he kept a portion of his attention on Lilith's mother as well. He was ready to jump in wherever he was needed on either end of things.
"Okay, I don't know how good I'll be at the moment but I'll give it a shot. It's part of the play that we just wrapped up." He cleared his throat and focused himself for a second before starting to speak. He kept his voice lower than he would if he was on the stage but she would easily notice a change in his accent. There are many things from which I might have derived good, by which I have not profited, I dare say, Christmas among the rest. But I am sure I have always thought of Christmas time, when it has come round -- apart from the veneration due to its sacred name and origin, if anything belonging to it can be apart from that -- as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time: the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow-passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys. And therefore, uncle, though it has never put a scrap of gold or silver in my pocket, I believe that it has done me good, and will do me good; and I say, God bless it!
