Elusive White Rabbit
Unlike the other Field within Steam Demon where time has seemingly stopped, this one is much more lively. The streets are constantly filled with people running to work and the sound of clanking metal and puffing smoke can be heard all around. Built upon cogwheels, this city is constantly spinning as to perfectly line up bridges and roads that link the cogs. The Field was named after the citizens who will always be seemingly late within this highly time-centric city.

Outskirts of the city. Monster zone.
Now this is the heart and soul of Magnus. In this game, there is nothing that will bring him joy compared to the rush he feels in combat. During battle, there is nothing but his swords and a bloodlust that he has concealed for much too long. Video games make you violent? He would gladly object... It is life outside that gives him the want to kill.
Right now, he stands in the center of the area, watching for any possible targets. 3 blades are in front of him, their blades cutting both the ground and the the fading corpses of old targets. Blood was splattered across the front of his garments, turning the writing on the front of his robe to the unmistakable dull red of death.
And there's a monster! He grabbed two of the blades, the Holy Avenger and GraveKeeper, and charged. No skills, it was a waste of SP at this point. No hesitation, one blade has already disabled the robot's left arm. The other is ready to block. However, these monsters are stronger than he was himself. With juggernaut strength, the monster has knocked out the Holy Avenger from his other hand. Not willing to retrieve his blade, he took out two more, the Death Guidance, and began slashing with speed...
...
Eventually, there was yet another monster dead at his feet. He picked up the four weapons and placed them with the other blades. All five blades are in front of him now, the fruits of being an Adept Rogue. However, he still needs two more...
Death Scythe Vanagarmr... And the Excalibur...

Breaker gated into the field, her coveted blue doll resting atop her shoulder. She spun in a circle, twirling her scythe around her, singing about decapitated zombies. "Why hello there," she said cheerfully, skipping towards the other player. She stopped just short of his blades and offered her token creepy smile. Emily, her doll, cackled. "That one's hasty! He's not ready for this field and yet he runs forth, eagerly awaiting death!"Breaker playfully shook her head. "Emily, you really shouldn't be so rude to guests. If he wishes to get himself killed then that's none of our business," she said light heartedly, widening her disturbing grin. "But if you truly desire death, I could help you with that quite nicely," she commented, tenderly stroking her scythe.

"...a battle... The monsters here are level 22. It's not that hard to win a battle like that. (He smiles) I have no idea what you're talking about. I can't be killed. Not now." A laugh, and he draws his dual fans. When it comes to bosses, we have to to keep a strong spell series... Hopefully, this will be good. Afterall, a few spells on me and a few spells on her, and we'll be on equal grounds... I guess.
"You're a Reaper, aren't you? How about you and I join a party and kill off all of them? These monsters are strong and fun, I'm sure the majority is always a better choice."
What's with that doll? A second person? AI? Virus... Maybe? Who is this person... Would I win? Maybe not... I'm done for. Should I fight? Or simply run away? I don't like company during killing, anyhow...

Breaker laughed callously. "Oh trust me. You can be killed," she said confidently. "I've seen your type before, all puffed up and proud of yourself. It just takes one decisive loss to have you question your abilities," she said in a knowing tone.
"And I'm the one whose rude to guests?"Emily said pointedly.
"Arrogant dogs need to be put in their place at some point. I'm not being rude. I'm doing him a service. A reality check is much needed,"she said cooly, continuing to spin her scythe as if it were a baton. She always caught it gracefully and expertly.
"But I wouldn't mind teaming up with you. There are many creatures here and I haven't had a good fight in a while. It could be more fun playing with two," she said noncommittally.
"By the way chump, Breaker's title isn't just Reaper. It's Flick Reaper. Read up on basic classes, why don't you?" Emily contradicted.
Breaker rolled her eyes. "Please excuse my friend. She can be a bit anal and unnecessary. My class shouldn't matter to you, anyways. It's my abilities on the battlefield that count."

His gait suddenly bent itself crooked. He kept his smile, and his eyes faded into slits. Leaning against two of his blades, he threw all five of the into the air and took a few steps back.
"Reeeaaalllittttty. Check. Oooohh! You mean my request for information on Excalibur. I see what you're on about... Sorry, but it would be reaaalll bad for me to die now. I'll pull back on your offer." By this time, the blades were falling, but as they fell, he grabbed each one and put them away in their respective places, ending with the Gravekeeper's, which was sheathed on his back.
"I'll be going, if you don't mind. Since you don't want to train with me, I think I'll practice fighting elsewhere."

"Excalibur," Breaker said thoughtfully. "The legendary sword that belonged to the greatest king; but, what was more special, the sword or the scabbard? The sword was brilliant. It could cut and slice so magnificently and whenever the destined person held it, it was like it was forged only for them, a piece of themselves," she said reverently.
"But the scabbard was incredible too. It could heal any wound and so as long as the owner possessed it, he could not die. He could continue to fight."
Emily cackled. "Sounds like a bunch of crackpot gibberish to me."
Breaker clamped a hand over Emily's mouth. "Now Emily, you can't go telling the truth like that. People love legends and put a lot of faith them. It's much easier to think there is an item that can make you invincible and search for that item instead of training to become stronger yourself," she said good naturedly.
Emily made gasping sounds as if she were suffocating.
"If you're a coward, by all means take your leave," she said pleasantly, her disturbing grin ever present. She finally released her grip on Emily and the doll chocked before laughing.
"Ke he he...I'm not sure if he's a coward but he's definitely afraid of you. And who wouldn't be? You are about as stable as a teapot positioned on the edge of a table," Emily quipped.
"Oh, Emily, will you never learn? Sanity is in the eye of the beholder. What if it's not me who is insane but the whole world? What if I'm the only sane person left?"
"Then I feel sorry for this world!" Emily burst out laughing and Breaker quickly pressed her hand against her mouth.

"I'm not interested in legends, really. My goal is to possess a collections of swords and show the full potential of an Adept Rogue. The Excalibur, or just showing that you were once a wielder... That's a very good thing. And to get that sword, I must have power. These blades will be just as strong as the stuff of legends!" Magnus laughed, and fanned himself with his Mountain of 1000 Needles. In hindsight, long names are a bit of a pain.
"You seem to like buttering yourself up. Well, I can say you're quite the intimidating person. If I fight, I'll die for sure. Coward is what you're calling me, is it? Alright, then... Should I stay, or should I fight? If I'm a coward I'll leave, if you're a sadist, you'll stay. So I guess this will be a fun situation for both of us."

"Whatever sword you get can never be as great as the swords of legend. The whole point of a legend is that it is a fairy tale. It's make believe. It's fiction. In short, not real. It's meant to awe and inspire, encourage people to reach unimagined depths in search for something that never has and never will exist. People need to dream. The sword you find or forge may eventually become legend but that will be based on exaggerations and people's need to believe in something greater than reality," she contradicted.
Emily bit Breaker's hand and she released her with a yell. "Emily," she scoffed, rolling her eyes. "Don't bite the hand that feeds you."
"And when exactly was the last time you fed me? You're the one whose always stuffing your face with candy!" Emily said indignantly.
Breaker extracted a box of gumballs and shook it obnoxiously before opening the lid and plopping a tasty sweet into her mouth.
"Sorry. Didn't catch any of that. What were you saying?" she said with a nasty grin, shoving a gumball down Emily's throat. Emily made choking noises.
"You're trying to kill me!" she said with raspy breath after a moment. The she chuckled. "The kid's right about you, though. You sure do love buttering yourself up, making yourself out to be special because you're so strange."
She nodded pleasantly. "I take pleasure from being what I am. I can't help it if others are jealous because they have regrets about what they are and what they can do."
She grinned maliciously, licking her lips. "A sadist. I do so love the sound of that!"
She rubbed her hands together eagerly. "Oh yes this should be quite the spectacle!"

Magnus now stood tall, his hands in his sleeves, watching the odd spectacle in front of him. A doll and its master, it's all so strange for him, and he still has little idea of who these odd people were. But it's not like she's an idiot. This is a dangerous opponent that's playing fun at the situation. Of course, it's easy to have fun when you're bound to win. If either one suddenly changed emotion, then the battle would be over.
It's also interesting to see how she's not going to launch the first blow. That's a bit... Ugh, this "battle" might as well just be a nice talk. Nice, of course, being the... relative term. "Humans are good at doing anything they so damn please. If I want the sword Excalibur, it will come to me in full glory, ones beyond the legend. Maybe, perhaps..." He drew the Holy Avenger, and pointed it at the reaper in front of him.
"Maybe my blades will become the next "Excalibur", the next legend. There's no way to be sure, but it's as hell as damn fun to think about such things." He dropped the blade, and leaned against it. "Of course, you don't seem to be interested in legends at all. You enjoy yourself and making yourself look bigger while crushing all others. For some reason, you seem to be a lot like me. Quite a dangerous person, I would say."
Magnus sighed, this person... seems... like the kind that will not take fun with fighting alongside someone else. This was a bit... annoying. "It's going to be a fun night. It's going to be a long night..."

Breaker laughed jubilantly but the laughter somehow sounded vicious. Unless she was playing a role, nothing about her ever seemed kind.
"Humans can do whatever they damn well please?!" she said in between fits of giggles. "You honestly believe that?!" she asked incredulously.
She shook her head. "No, the only thing we're really good at is justification and self delusion."
"Although we should receive high praise for that. We're quite creative when we need to be. When it comes to making ourselves look better and blaming our faults on other people or other things it's incredible how quickly we shut off the logic part of our brains," she said in good humor.
Breaker tilted her head curiously. "Not interested in legends?" she asked coyly. "Now whatever gave you that I idea? I have a great deal of interest in legends."
The menacing grin that was plastered on her face grew in size and magnitude. "Legends make such wonderful tools," she said wickedly.
"It's amazing. The length you can manipulate people when you offer token promises of various legends is simply stunning."
She laughed. "It certainly makes my job a lot easier. I just need to figure out which legend each person covets. There is always one that truly captures their interest and they will do anything to see that legend proven true."
"Ooooh! Dangerous!" Breaker's eyes sparkled. "I do like the sound of that!"
"Ke he he...Kid's pretty bright after all. Knows you're intimidating and dangerous. He just forgot twisted but I guess that was implied with sadist."
Breaker patted Emily on the head. "See Emily. You can give compliments if you really try."
Breaker was not going to strike the first blow. Although she loved to unnerve others by revealing what precise control she exerted over her scythe through twirls and various other graceful yet unnecessary exercises, when it came to battle she wasted no movements.
Her style was controlling and manipulating others. She responded to strikes. She dodged attacks and unbalanced her opponents with swift well placed thrusts before delivering the finishing blow. Her attacks always appeared perfectly choreographed like a dance. Her moves never seemed overly aggressive despite her sadistic personality.
What Magnus didn't understand was that Breaker wouldn't mind playing alongside another character if it achieved some goal. But as there was nothing she currently wanted, nothing that Magnus could give her, she would much prefer fighting him. An A.I.'s psychology wasn't nearly as complex as a human's. You couldn't toy with A.I.s as well. Couldn't place doubt in their mind and rip their world apart piece by pitiful piece and watch their fragile psyche shatter. Well depending upon the complexity of A.I. you could but not nearly as well. The most complex A.I. was still not nearly as complicated as a human.
Magnus was very right. Breaker was indeed a sadist but what he likely failed to understand was that Breaker was a psychological sadist. She did enjoy some good blood-lust but her true joy was bringing people to their knees through psychological torment. It was always fun figuring out what combination of intimidation and words worked best. Everyone responded differently. They feared different things. Oh how she loved discovering just what made everyone tick.

This whole incident was becoming slightly less odd, but it was still... very, very, VERY unnerving. She was the sinister kind, but there was something more to her. It's been taking Magnus quite a while to piece things together, though, so the whole truth hasn't reached him. But he has been able to make good observations. Whether it's due to his past as a martial artist, or a sort of natural brilliance, who could say for sure? He has learned several key things...
First, neither of them were willing to strike first. We were both people who knew how to counter and weave through attacks quickly and efficiently. From the looks of her aptitude with her scythe, Magnus could only guess that her abilities with the weapon was greater than his. And summoning a large amount of blades could make him extremely clumsy, and therefore, make him an easy target.
This also means that she is not exactly the kind of sadist he thought she was. If she was a real sadist, she wouldn't have hesitated on dealing a horrible, painful blow on him. But no blood spilled... only words and opinions... Her words... her words...
"Legends make such wonderful tools"...
She's looking into my mental thought process. She does this on a regular basis, at that, to think of legends as tools. Is this what you would call pure sadism? Oh, what sort of twisted person has he met now? Not only that, she says it's her JOB. It's all a bit confusing, the way she talks with, nevertheless HAS, a talking doll on her shoulder, the manner of speech, her ability to know of people's inner workings, and... ...the way she said humans...
"Your... job? Is your job... manipulation and... examining us? Us... humans? You say that as if you weren't human, like some sort of conglomeration of data."

Breaker leaned against her scythe, looking very much contented and relaxed. However, in actuality she was incredibly alert. She would be ready to respond within an instant should Magnus attack. However, she doubted he would move that quickly. If he truly yearned a fight or was easily provoked, he would have attacked already.
"Hmmmmm," she pondered, unconcerned. "Is it my job?" she repeated. "Would you consider your hobby a job? I suppose it depends. Sometimes it's a job because I want or need something but typically it's just a pleasure, something I love doing," she said honestly without the slightest hint of regret or guilt.
"And when I said humans I was quoting you. I don't think I'm so grand as to be placed above humanity."
Emily cackled. "But you view everything so indifferently, even your own affairs. The way you evaluate people, boiling them down to strengths and weakness that you can bend and mold to your whim to obtain something, that's not humane. I would go so far as to say it's not even human. Sometimes you act like something else entirely."
"And what is this something else I act like?" she asked curiously.
Emily shrugged. "If I understood that you probably wouldn't be as scary. People fear you because you don't make sense. They don't understand your thought process. Even when you want to obtain something, you're difficult to read because what you want isn't normal. You don't want gold or riches or fame. It's all very abstract but it's not mere entertainment you seek. There is something...."
Emily laughed again. "I'm pretty disturbed but even I can't read you. Sometimes I wonder just how twisted you are up there."

"A hobby is something you do when there is nothing else to do. A job is what you do to obtain something in reward, be it money or otherwise. Perhaps it cannot even be categorized as either of the two, and instead, must be marked as a skill." While a person taking pleasure to this was a bit... inhumane, Magnus remembered that this was an online environment. Here, people can fight, kill, anything... without guilt or worry. That is what made this world so beautiful, but twisted. But whenever he would try to imagine the face behind this one.....
Emily gave a very good point, but Magnus didn't trust the little ragdoll. Its attitude entirely was offsetting, and it seemed to... "If I understood that you probably wouldn't be as scary." But that itself is saying that she feared this person. Something isn't lining up, exactly... not really... not at all.
Magnus chuckled and replied to Emily. "Didn't she already say? She is the sane one, and we are all twisted at the odd angle. Her ways and behaviors are something she has done since creation, and is utterly, perfectly normal. I am the more odd individual here, changing the way of living to join this world and kill and fight. You are also odd, staying with the person you fear, it's as if you depended on her, or if you were created by her in the first place. See, she is perfectly sane. We are the mad ones here."

Breaker shook her head. "I disagree with you on several accounts," she said pleasantly.
"One, a hobby isn't something you do when there is nothing else do. A hobby is something you seek out. It's something you genuinely want to do. You don't do it because you have nothing better to do with your time. You do it because you love it dearly," she explained listlessly
"Two, you don't really need to obtain something for you to consider something a job. A job can also be a responsibility or obligation. For example, you can feel that it is your job to look after your younger sibling. You don't earn anything tangible from that experience and the experience might not even be a pleasant one. None-the-less, perhaps it is something your parents require of you and so it is something you must do."
"And third, my manipulation and examination might be skills but they're so much more than that. Skills are something you hone for practical implication. You can be skilled without relishing your abilities. But I truly do love to manipulate and examine," she said cooly. With the level of passion in her tone, you might have expected her to discuss the weather.
Breaker wondered how long it would take Magnus to discover that the doll was her puppet and she was simply using ventriloquism to speak for it. It generally took players a little bit of time to catch on and some never did. Some assumed Emily was another player. Very few people indeed thought that Breaker was using true ventriloquism. This was a game world. She could simply be altering her voice through a program and speaking at different times for both Emily and herself.
"And I told you if that was the case I pitied the world!" Emily cackled. "Really, if she is the sane one, I think the world's better off being destroyed!"
Breaker shook her head. "Really, Emily? You think I'm that dreadful?" she asked cheerfully.
"You're certainly interesting," Emily said candidly.
Emily leaned towards Magnus. "As for why I stay with this fruitcake, you could say I fit into one of the categories of someone she can use for her own agenda. I'm being blackmailed by this bitch."
"Now now, Emily dear. I wouldn't go so far as to say I was blackmailing you. I simply expressed concern that if you didn't behave appropriately, information you found less than appealing could perhaps be released to interested parties," she said playfully.
"Blackmailing Bitch! Blackmailing Bitch! Blackmailing Bitch!" Emily taunted before Breaker clamped her hand over Emily's mouth, causing the doll to gag.
"That's quite enough out of you, Emily," she said amicably.
