As you gate in to the field you are hit with the scorching heat, blinding sunlight, and harsh dry wind. The ground is solid beneath your feet but there is sand in the air. As your eyes adjust, you can more easily take in the surroundings.
Perched atop a large raised stone plateau in the midst of a desert landscape. You are standing 20 feet from the edge. Looking down over the edge the descent looks impassable. Behind you there is a cave.

[Gate in]
The rings materialized in a flash and stream of blue; seemingly randomly setting specks and particles of light together to create a solid object. In this case, as the rings and the light that spurred from them faded, a male avatar appeared in the field. His feet first touched upon a layer of dirt and sand, high atop a cliff that overlooked a vast dessert environment, as his eyes adjusted with a few blinks.
In hand he bore a remarkable sword; furled in gold and with a sparkling blue gem at the crux of its hilt and leading up into the long, silver blade itself. He appeared to be naught but seventeen or eighteen and was of both fair skin and hair. The latter being a ruffled and wavy blonde. Edged blue eyes first peered out further along the field, before he took a few steps forward and looked at the impassable.
'Shew, long way down, he thought; thereafter turning from the ledge and observing what was behind him. In the distance, he could not help but notice a cave; and figuring that was as good of a place as any to start, he took to a pleasant stride and headed off in its direction.
These were the first few moments that the avatar Loki spent in a field.

...[GATE IN!]
There, where the gate’s golden rings had left her, a dessert sprawled far beneath—it was scorching, god. Sand and sun and golden dessert heat. Uelle couldn’t help shielding her eyes from the sunny onslaught as she carefully took in the surroundings. The field… it looked fairly normal this time. Not that she had estimated any less, but then what was ‘normal’ for this game? Rather, Uelle looked confused, as if she had expected something amazing to pop out the minute she gated in. Was that not the ‘norm’ here? A little vicious cycle of friekish and insanity? Maybe some gore as a little something extra? Well, only time would tell. Or some deadman.
After filling her eyes with the dessert scenery she turned and saw the cave. There didn’t seem to be anywhere else she could head to. And there, walking right into its maw, was a player. Relief quickly set in at the thought that she wouldn’t be alone through this field. “Hey—Hey wait!” she called and hurried on after him.

The sun was directly overhead, and they could see the heat radiating off the hot ground ahead of them. As the players approached the cave mouth two creatures emerged. The catlike creatures sniffed the air and paced back and forth, looking at the approaching players, their tails swishing back and forth slowly.
A sudden increase in the wind obscured the players' view of the cave for a few moments as dust buffeted their faces and eyes. When it passed, the creatures were gone.

"Huh?" Loki muttered as he stopped dead in his tracks. Her words had indeed reached him, and were plenty enough to delay him from exploring the nearby cave. Towards her, he turned and waited as she caught up in ground.
In the Root Town of Mac Anu, he had seen several like her: character models; rather avatars which represented players, much like himself. However, her sudden arrival was surprising. It was hard to believe that someone picked the same three key words as he did, and just shortly after he had gated out. Although, that wasn't to say he was unhappy. Being alone wasn't something he fancied, even in a virtual world.
The passing glimpse of two cat-like-creatures faded to the back of his mind. If they had wanted to attack, would not they have used the brief brush in the wind to their advantage? Yes, they had disappeared, but any indication that they still poised a threat, was stilled for the time being.
Holding his sword off to the side, he greeted her; "Heya," and with the opposite hand he offered her a friendly handshake. "I'm Loki," he said. "Did you want to join up with me?"

Her hand stretched forward, reaching toward the player’s retreating figure before he would go into the beckoning shadows of the cavern. Her brow gave in to a twitch then. The scene, it felt so familiar. Just like this, she had chased after that person into the shadows that one time and like then, she couldn’t help feeling that ominous foreboding slither through her skin. She shivered at the memory and slowed. Remembering such ominous feelings, what in the world drove her? And the character before her—he was a man. And unlike that person, this one stopped and turned and looked at her. Uelle hadn’t realized that she had stopped in perfect synchrony with the boy and that she was now staring at him with her pinkish eyes as he introduced himself.
“Ahh…Yeah, nice to meet you. I’m Uelle. And yes, if you wouldn’t mind.” It felt weird to shake his hand; her grip was hesitant. Probably because he’s the first person to show some genuine form of manner to her. A pleasant surprise. She smiled. The gesture was brief however as two cat-like monsters appeared. As if on auto, she turned serious and drew out her weapon, a scythe made from a sort of clear material. But before her weapon even finished materializing into her hand, the creatures disappeared behind a screen of wind and sand, and they were left staring at just the mouth of the cavern again. Now that was weird. Maybe they were not monsters after all. "Looks like we should just go in" she thought out loud and cut away the remaining distance between them and the cavern, her expression somewhat curious, but otherwise unreadable.

The wind picked up again, blowing fiercely from the mouth of the cave. More dust buffets the players, the wind howling, and then dies down. A barrier of wind and dust remains at the cave mouth, blocking escape in that direction.
On either side of the players, a cougar crouched, teeth bared, tail flicking back and forth. Their sandy colored fur was bristling along their back. They stood there, as if waiting for something.

The gale ruffled through his hair and flung its blonde locks into disarray. With a hand, he tried for a moment to hold it in place. Such was proven fruitless, and significantly less important given the current situation. The cavern that had once been open to them, was instead blocked by a roaring cyclone of sand, and at their sides two cougar like creatures prowled; no doubt waiting for the opportune moment to pounce.
He turned to face one, but not before glancing at his new companions weapon. 'Twas a large scythe in fact, one that despite her size, she seemed to know how to wield. In the World, Loki was beginning to guess that anything was possible. Try as he might, he could not shy away from his look of amazement; however brief it was, she might have seen it.
"Uh...back-to-back sound good to you?" He asked, accidentally taking his intentions further than he meant to by ushering a step back and momentarily brushing up against her. "Sorry...first monster encounter is...a bit more real than I expected." Excusing himself further, he gave his blade a practice swing and prepared for whatever the cat-like-creatures could toss at them.

She looked over her shoulder and saw what Loki already noticed. The entrance had been blocked by that same screen of sand as before. Hmm. For the first time she wondered what kind of field had she gated into this time just as two cougars appeared seemingly out of nowhere with claws and fangs gnarling at them. “Then I’ll take this one.” She responded confidently, swinging her scythe into a menacing pose. An ordinary battle. This would be just some ordinary battle.
She felt Loki lightly to her back and she smiled, genuinely, at his apology. “I know what you mean. “ Her devilish weapon flashed an astral gleam as she charged toward one of the cougars and swung its cutting edge. “Wait—you’re new!?” She blurted out in mid-swing.

As the scythe sliced through the air towards the cat, it let out a growl and leaped backwards out of reach. It was a deep, throaty, reverberating growl that made your hair stand on end, and put a chill up your spine. Landing on all fours, claws fully extended, it fully bared its teeth. The cat dashed around the players, an irregular zig-zag pattern as it charged. As it ran it seemed to disappear from one place and appear in another, almost like an apparition. It's mate kept it's distance, watching every move, every step, every small change of stance.

"'Ya couldn't you tell?" Loki asked, now holding his sword with both hands as he watched the advanced A.I. of the World direct the creatures. In the back of his mind, he scolded himself for not first purchasing a shield to go along with his blade. If he had to defend, he would have to awkwardly repel fangs and claws with its edge, or perform an array of physical dodges. Neither of which seemed very promising.
If he had learned anything from the first few seconds that had passed, it was that these cougars were not just fast, but smart predators. One shifted between them, around them, and past them; barring its fangs and growling beneath them. While the other, simply watched, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
Loki's gaze shifted, and his head swiveled between the both of them; trying ever so desperately to keep up in case one finally decided to pounce. This was to no avail, and with a rather defeated look upon his face, Loki took to charging the cougar that observed; hoping that even if he missed, the other one would be momentarily distracted.
As he swung his sword, he let out a near deafening, "Hah!" With a glint, the blade gleamed for a moment as it tore through the air. For extra momentum, he had hopped into the strike and as the strike would reach his foe, he would land softly with a pat, only a half meter or so away from it.

Her thoughts swam for a second, trying to double back and look over any indications that verified this new truth she’s learned. But she couldn’t really pin anything on him. He sounded like it had been an obvious fact, but then how would she know? She was technically still considered a newb herself, still doing stupid things and getting into stupid fights. Or maybe she was just stupid herself…What was she thinking?
“No. I’ve hardly been a player myself!” The scythe finished its full swing right before responding, neatly cutting through the air but wholly missing its target. She pressed her lips into a thin line and drew back her scythe as the cougar’s profound growl thrummed through her bones, alerting all her senses. It began to zigzag around them the next moment. Uelle found herself having a difficult time keeping up with its damnable quick movements. She noticed Loki wasn’t having any better luck. Had they gated into a high-level field? She tightened her grip on her scythe and waited, knowing she would be unable to match the beast’s superior speed. Even as Loki’s voice resounded in the back of her head as he charged, she tried on her patience and waited for the next thing to happen.

Both cougars, in unison, lept back a meter from the players, placing themselves square on either side once again . They raised themselves up on their hind paws, and each let out a mighty, bellowing roar. The sound was so intense, both players lost consciousness almost instantly.
The cougars paused, remaining upright for a moment. Then they both changed shape into humanoid forms, standing over the unconscious players. One was slightly taller than the other, with shorter hair, and carried two daggers. Both were dressed in skins with tattoos covering half their body. The shorter one had long tan hair and spots.
"It has been many seasons since outsiders tread here," said the female. She paused. "Are they the ones who would be sent?"
Some time later, the players awake. It's dark. The air is dry, and musty. They realize their weapons have been taken, and try as they might, they are unable to gate out. They are in a stone cavern. It is small, and there is a thick wood door before them.

"Sheesh, they're fast!" Loki exclaimed, preparing already to make chase after the one whom had leapt away. His blade had missed wildly, and he had been made to look rather foolish by the beast that had so elegantly and effortlessly, avoided his strike. However, the roar in unison proved to be all that he could handle.
In the instant that it occurred, the World spun about in a haze, and out of reflex he attempted to shield his ears with his hands. Louder and louder the sound only grew until the point in which he could no longer discern friend from foe, ground from sky. All this happened so fast, and so suddenly, that he only managed to catch a glimpse of his partner before collapsing to the sand-ridden ground below and letting darkness take him.
Whence he woke, he could not be sure how much time had passed. However, he was certain that he was still in the World. That he confirmed by trying to gate out. Simply put, nothing happened and he was forced to scramble about looking for the girl that had been with him before he fainted.
"Uelle,"he spoke, finding his voice raspy and his throat rather sore. "L," he tried again this time crawling about the stone floor. Still weak from just waking up, it was all he could do to make out a framed, wooden door before him. For a moment he paused, hoping that somewhere in the midst of his small, little, hovel, another would rouse from slumber and offer some sort of inclination as to what happened.

She couldn’t agree more. Their speed had yet to falter even the tiniest bit. Just bobbing her head back and forth after their shadows was the best she could do to keep up with them. She could hear the other player shift behind her, readying for another charge. The urge to protect the new kid took over her system fast. Almost naturally. She didn’t even register it as her body switched to a defensive stance “Stay close.” She whispered and shot one last glance at Loki before the roars began. She too instinctively tried to block her ears, but it did nothing to stop the pain from splitting her head in two and passing out immediately.
She slowly awoke later to the sound of her name, her senses turning back on sluggishly, like from sleep, beneath the dim lighting. As if she’d been startled at having overslept, her eyes snapped open and hurriedly took in the ceiling. Her breath came in startled pants. “Loki?” She responded after he called to her again. “You ok?” Did the cougars get them? Was this…death? No. She’d been told what happened when a player dies and getting this crappy headache was not it. “They got us good.” She mumbled beneath her breath, not really sure of what her own words meant. Straightening up, she spotted Loki staring at a wooden door sitting leisurely amidst the shadows. The place looked different from before—changed, somehow. They were not in the cave anymore, were they? “That’s new” She slowly closed their distance, eying the door suspiciously.

The door opened, revealing an empty curved stone passageway about 2 meters tall, wide enough to them to walk through. Orange, flickering light from around the bend cast strange shadows into the small room and revealed a cat's face carved into the wall opposite the door. The carving had black glass eyes, and was surprisingly detailed. The sandy color of the stone it was carved in reminds you of something, but you can't place your finger on it.

"'Ya...just a headache," Loki replied as he struggled to his feet. Shortly after such, the door before them opened, letting in a small amount of refracted, orange light into the room. What it revealed wasn't much; except for an odd carving of what appeared to be some sort of cat, upon the opposite wall. After a few seconds of internal debate, Loki decided that the object was due for a closer look and, leaving Uelle near the doorway, he walked; guided by what little light that they now had.
"Hey," he said coming to a halt. "Does this look familiar to you?" He asked while titling his head slightly to the side, as if that would allow him to better examine the carving. In reality, all it did was skew his perspective further, and ensure him that he had indeed seen something like what rested on the wall before.
With curiosity getting the better of him, Loki reached out a hand to touch the statuette. At the present moment, thoughts of traps, and other Worldish dangers had not even occurred to him. "Why do you think 'anyone would hang decorations in a place like this?"

Without the slightest urge the door slid open. Inside there was a bent passageway; an orange hue seemed to distance everything. It strangely reminded her of the light of dawn. And in the shadows of dawn, opposite to them, there was a carving of a cat engraved with blinded eyes. Despite the new light, the room was still dim, so Uelle couldn’t make out any of its details. But a feeling of familiarity possessed her regardless in that moment. She parted her lips, perhaps with the intention of voicing out her thoughts, but she strangely remained silent. Rather, she watched Loki seize the initiative that should have been hers to take. Their levels might not be far apart, but she was still the more experienced player. This could all very easily be a trap. She should have been warning him and yet, there she was glued to the doorway as if caught in a daze induced by the ominous room.
Watching her company stretch his hand toward the stone face, she couldn’t shake away the feeling that something had been off ever since they passed out before. She ignored his last question and finally wrenched herself forward, “Wait. Don’t touch it yet.” She called out as she made to stop him.

The players were both distracted by the figure on the wall and didnt see the shadow coming down the passageway. The silhouetted figure spoke to the player by the door. "Our goddess speaks to him. She is calling to him in a way he can't resist." She once again was silent for a minute to let her words sink in. "He can't hear you."
At that moment, Loki saw a vision. In it, a gentle glowing light surrounded him, and a voice spoke that resonated within his skull. you must help us. They will wake soon, and we cannot fight them alone. Flashed, rapid images of gore, death, darkness, and a feeling of evil washed over him for a moment before the glow returned. if you do not help us, our land will be overcome. A heroes cannot be forced, but must rise on their own.
something about this seemed familiar, as if he had seen this before, but then it all faded away. A moment later his eyes re-focused and he was looking at the stone carving on the wall. He was still trying to figure out what had just happened.

When Loki heard the voice, he first thought it had been Uelle calling out to him. In a way, it had said his name; but then again he had touched upon that mesmerizing stone face, and as he tried to turn away from it, instead of finding his partner, there was nothing but an intense wave of warmth and then a gentle serene presence.
That same presence spoke, and warned of the coming of...well...something. He wasn't quite sure what, but he was certain enough that as images of blood, death and other gore eccentrics were shown to him, that whomever was coming would bring only death with them.
Wait, he had wanted to call out, but found himself unable to. This presence wanted his help, however how was he supposed to help if he didn't know what he needed to stop. Despite his protest, the presence left him and soon reality took shape again. He felt weak, but could still stand, yet he expected that he would look like he had just seen a ghost. A great feeling of cold came over him and all he could do was stare at the hidden figure by Uelle.
"W-was that you...?" He asked.
