Mac Anu
Son of a Goddess [Sanctuary] Mac Anu is the first stop for every new Player. Being the largest Root Town, there are often many Players of all levels found here. The buildings here are renaissance in architecture. Water has many uses within this Town. There are numerous fountains of all sizes dotting Mac Anu. If you need to get around, the easiest way to do this is to hitch a ride on one of the many gondolas that snake their way through the canals that are all across Mac Anu. On the edge of Mac Anu are docks with large boats at harbor.

Well look who logged in. A shadow, that's who. Not a shadow of the anteater, or the anteater's ghost, but a shadow nonetheless. Anonymity for the win. The peculiar female avatar, dressed like a grim reaper, walked into town. A perfectly normal thing to do for anybody logging into the game. Now, she is casting fire spells off the bridge into the water. This is also a perfectly normal thing to do for anybody logging into the game. Probably. Even if it isn't, nobody is watching. But, the shadow in grim reaper clothes smiles for the KUREEJII time approaches.

Keth gated in, a distracted look upon his face as he started towards the NPC item vendor's shops. He was in dire need of basic supplies if he intended to actually go out on any adventures. It made him curious that his inventory was bare, barring his equipment.
It was a fruitful search, but not in the way he originally expected.
From the other side of the river, flame magics were pouring out into the channel, telling boredom as though Morse code. He finished his interactions with the NPC in front of him, making his way around through the main courtyard to the bridge. Something interesting was happening. He smiled in anticipation, quickening his step as he came around the corner into view.

"Bang." The computer pyrotechnician got to work pointing her finger with motivation in an aimless direction. Like a Spike's Finale gif. Sometimes there were sparks; sometimes there were colours; but, most of the time there were flames. It was the old environment interaction-less kind of flame. Nothing burned, but it burned nonetheless. As far as memories go, things don't really burn in this town, except maybe ducks. Maybe that guy Keth'al knows. "Where are the ducks?"
Also, are there cooldowns and mana costs for this light show or was it free? If she was a gamer or a hacker, she would have known.

Keth blinked at the reaper-clad figure in front of him. Clearly he was dealing with a player, not a bot or event. Still, that did little to dispel his confusion.
"Excuse me? I haven't seen anything except Grunties and NPCs. Are there usually ducks?"
He paused for a moment, his heart leaping. If there were players here again, then that meant they might be elsewhere, too. They might not all be gone. Somehow, he remembered his manners.
"Oh! Excuse me! My name's Ketha'al. This might sound like a weird question, but have you seen anyone... Real, around here?"
It wasn't quite what he meant to say, but he couldn't figure out a better way to ask it.

"Something tells me there are ducks here. Keth-all...?" Yet, it could all have been in passing. A sigh was released into the air and the girl in black mildly despairs at her fickle memory.
The player hopped onto the railings of the bridge in such a way that elegance of movement was an element to the laws of gravity, and that even the laws of physics was not universal. Thus, a perpetual counterweight balanced her erratic actions on the bridge's railing. She spun, and then spun again because she liked the sound of her cape; and then she spun again for shits and giggles. Finally, there was a settlement on which point of view she would lay her sights on. While squinting her eyes at the pixels before her, she hummed and hummed.
"I don't see anything real from here. Oh, well, my voice is real. That counts. Are there usually real things here?"
Now, back on the bridge, the blue eyes scanned the fellow 'male'.

"There are no ducks or real things here, only Zuul"
Being intrusive is ahat Yura always does best. The time between her speaking up and actually gating in was uncomfortably long. It was as if she we just standing and watching for eternity before making her presence known to others here. Just on the other side of bridge she began to step toward the non-npcs she was watching, grinning.

That escalated quickly. He watched the girl on the railing spin in a way that defied logic, before answering him in a way that gave him no actual information. He was pleased to see another actual player, even if they were quirky. He raised his hand to grasp at his chin thoughtfully before replying.
"In a way. The term does become a bit grey in a place like this, but I moreso meant 'real' as 'has a body outside of this'. Am I the first one you've seen? How long he you been here?"
The question came out deadpan, dying even as it left his lips. He locked his eyes on the quiet player that now approached them on the bridge. Something about the look of them set his guts roiling in alarm. He didn't recognize them, but something about them gave him the most uncomfortable feeling. The awkwardness ate at him. As he tried to reconcile the arrival's effect on his nerves, he turned halfway back to the player he was engaging, not quite ignoring the silent shadow but not directly engaging her either, a suspicious frown creeping across his face.
"I've been looking for friends, someone I might recognize. It's been a really long time since I've been here, you see, and my contact list must have gotten wiped with one of the patches since."
Or something, his internal voice picked at him impishly.

In response to Ketha'al, "Oh, you mean that kind of real. Yeah yeah, I get you." Video game logic dictates that NPCs and Players were clearly distinguishable, like a High School kid in a sea of salary man. With the interruption of the new object approaching them, the rest of her answer will have to wait.
A long piece of fringe hair fell across her pale face as the avatar's head tilted towards the lurker. Immediately, she turned and stomped down on the bridge's wooden blank with her "leather" textured black boot. "Yaa!" A noise that resembled an annoyed female Korean high school student screeched from the shadow character's mouth. "Who you calling Zuul, huh?" Gloved hands clenched in fists anchored themselves at the avatar's hips and the right foot tapped thunderously. "Nothing is real? Rude. Like I said, my voice is real, as is Ketha'al over here...probably." Blue eyes gazed back at Keth and her oversized black cloak raised as her shoulders shrugged.
"It is unfortunate that my memory is so bad that I am recalling ducks here. I may have been sleeping for a long time but, I'm pretty sure I'm not Zuul, and Keth is not Zuul. You are not Zuul either." She took a step forward to meet the "new" player's approach. She stared eyes wide while a small blue flame hovered aesthetically from her left eye. "I take it you smiling cause you trolling. Call me kureejii(crazy) but I bet you know where the ducks are."
Bets are on the table. Will there be ducks, or nada?

"Pretty sure the ducks were totally coded out. Sucks for you. No ducks for you. Either of you. I hope this news brings you nothing but pain and misery." Honestly Yura did not know if the ducks were coded out or not but whatever emotional pain she could possibly cause anyone at this point was fine with her. Her mean and mischievous grin never fading from her face as she got closer, stopping about three feet from the pair. They seemed familiar but it had been so long her mind may deceive her. "So sad, gonna cry?"

Keth's eyes went blank as his brain tried to process what was going on in front of him. Unconsciously, his brain poked at him: RIP Ducks:1999 - 20XX.
It was a lot to take in. He held a hand up to his head, steadying himself. After a few moments, he gave Yura a serious look.
"You give me the creeps."
Quite point-of-fact, really, but it had the potential to be quite inflammatory. Normally, he would have pursued a line of inquiry, tried to uncover more information about the things troubling him, but something about this new arrival put a sour taste in his mouth... Not to mention, she was pretty rude. It was a good enough reason to make Keth put off asking himself the important questions.

She pointed her finger out at the girl 3 feet away. "bang," fire. Safe zone or not, fire was always the answer. Even if it was cosmetic, spamming fire seemed like a fun thing to do for someone of questionable existence. There was also that possibility things could be different. Keth gaped. Really? She certainly wasn't easy to intimidate. Or sane, likely. This wasn't a good area for this, either. He was basically trapped at their mercy unless he decided to run away-- which was becoming a more viable option with every passing moment. It would be his luck to run into double psychos simultaneously: Honestly, it made him feel self-conscious... And Vanilla. He made no response to Yura's statement, but crossed his arms over his chest in a defensive stance, brooding uneasily. After a moment, he continues his train of thought.
"Let's be real here, you two are the first players I've seen in a long time, so I'm gonna be blunt with you. I hear from a reliable source (kind of) there's some really dangerous stuff left over from the old versions around here, and I also hear that there are some very dangerous people looking for it. I don't know what brought you here, but keep your eyes open. I wish I knew more-- could tell you details-- but I'm still just putting it together myself."
He looked down and to the side slightly, relaxing his stance and letting out an annoyed breath before raising his head and locking eyes on Yura's, though he spoke to both simultaneously.
"If you hear anything, let me know."
His friend request pinged in their inboxes, justified to himself by it being easier than remembering addresses. Besides, he needed more perspective in order to be useful at all, here, or everyone was going to end up suffering for his failure.

Even though this current avatar of Yura was new, she had a habit of losing passwords in her older age, she had an idea of what Keth was talking about. She had been playing [The World] for ages. Yura did not care in the least about the potential danger. It gave life some much needed entertainment. She accepted the friend request with a large grin. "Now we are tied together for eternity. No take backs."
Ignoring the need for personal space Yura closed the distance between her and Kureejii and decided to drape those open arms around her in a more malicious way than loving. The rejection meant nothing to her. Even if this was a safe zone it did not matter to her.
"As for the danger, what does it matter? Some self-righteous main character type will rise to the challenge and save everyone, as usual, as it always has been. I am just here to raise hell. It's just too bad we are in a safe zone." Yura had then decided to just bite into the shoulder of the girl in front and gnaw just for a moment, thinking.
"Are you the hero, to save us all? Do you have any more information on these dangerous happenings?"

Keth drew back as Yura approached, creating distance between them as she rounded on Kureejii.
"Yeah yeah, we're all friendly now..."
His stance did not affirm this. He sighed, running a hand through his hair and around his ears.
"A group, I assume, is targeting old players for leftover fragments of data from the old versions contained in their characters. Data pertaining to..."
He trailed off. Yura clearly didn't care, even if the danger was real and present. He failed to answer her question about heroics; it was just a cheap attempt to draw them out emotionally.

As the shadow grew more pensive, eyelids drooped subtly just as the lighting effects changed. There was no animation towards Yura's affection. Just a blank facial expression weary with old code and design textures. Perhaps her old graphical aesthetic was lagging behind as the avatar stood still, and silent.

Suddenly, her body jerked as if stuck in an animation cancellation loop. The grim reaper-looking avatar appeared silly, with Yura chewing into the hoodie, and head banging to the beat of...something. All the while the shaking and the moving, she would not budge one bit. "Oh. Not going to finish the thought? Just going to leave us in suspense here, buddy pal? Mysterious."
