Set in a corner of The World, bordered by water on all sides, is a small island in the shape of a perfect square. Within the square is what one would recognize as a park, street lamps dotting the entire field sporadically. There is a playground, a set of swings, everything you could ever imagine a kid would want when their mother or father takes them to the park. There is even a food stand that sells whatever it is you wish for, no money required either!
The water around the square is crystal clear as far as the eye can see, in the distance is a coast of some busy metropolitan area; while swimming around in the water is accessible, reaching the horizon in the distance is not. At night, there are very few places on the square that are in complete darkness. Perhaps there is some hidden evil within these dark and empty places?

She was laying there on her back with her head tilted as far back as her neck and the bench she were on allowed her to go. Her right arm was over her eyes, her right leg hanging off the side of the bench with her toes just barely touching the floor. DX was as still as a corpse, as quiet as a mouse; the way her body conformed to the bench, how relaxed her body seemed to the naked eye, made her statue-esque in nature. There was an almost picture-perfect quality to her laying there as she were with that background sitting there behind her. Her lack of hue against the crystal blue drew out her presence in that land of the long dead and gone.
It was a wonder how those long and dreadful horns that protruded out of her skull did not get caught in the small spaces that the bench had from the angle she were laying down on the object. It was also a wonder how such an absence of quality could even exist in an avatar in [The World]; the only distinguishing qualities that DX had were those viral green eyes and those long black horns that were clearly unauthorized to have. Why did she, of course, get to have something others couldn't? Perhaps the fact of the matter was that she was the only one there, everyone else had got up and left in her absence; there was nothing left for her here, in [The World], nothing that was worth coming back for.
There she were, that faithful day, laying there on that bench underneath the skybox in a world where even she no longer belonged. DX enjoyed when the servers hiccuped, when the world around her would glitch and split as if reality as she had come to know it was falling apart. The servers that held this reality, that held all of those memories that everyone who had ever played [The World] had made, must be slowly winding down in the small little heap of a shelter they must have still been in.
It was only a matter of time until...

He stood close to the rocks that bordered the water, eyes stretched to the horizon. All that there was left to watch in a game like this was the froth smacking against layers of fossils. Craning his head to the right, he lifted a hand up and touched the thin layer of skin on his ear. There was a static noise distracting him, resuming the usual motions a player would do when their sound card was destroyed. Sometimes he expected for strange and mysterious things to happen in [The World]. Today, he desired nothing. Well, maybe one thing. He knew a single word, a single action could send him over the edge. There would be blood. Perhaps not a lot, but enough to break the repetitive cycle of every day gaming. Mundane.
Finally, as if he heard great music, he turned his head. He looked down the walkway, noticing the field had a lot more to offer than just water. Sometimes he was visually impaired, but it came with his personality. With the blaring crimson filming his irises, he gave out a sigh. It made his appearance look slightly relaxing and friendly, even if his eyes always gleamed with malice. As he started to move, he walked forward, because there was only water in the opposite direction. Each movement appeared forced, the lethargy weighing him down. Occasionally he would lift a hand and tap his palm to one of ears, looking like he tried to get excessive water out.
Then, his arms dropped down to his sides as he continued onward. But he caught a woman in some type of funeral garb and let his eyes grimace to the figure that was sprawled upon the bench. Alexei looked at her with disinterest, never noticing illegal appearances.
He frankly didn't give a shit.

As if there was a bar graph in the back of her mind's eye that was slowly rising as an unknown existence slowly moved its way closer and closer to her. DX could feel it coming, she could almost see it in her mind but she truly didn't know what it was that had been approaching her. She always could have moved her arm and opened her eyes to see for herself but, for one reason or another, she didn't bother to do any such thing. It would appear that DX herself was too lazy to give a shit about whatever was coming her way regardless!
Her body didn't shift but her mind surely did wonder about what there was that was not too far off from her place there on that bench. There was a good chance that it was hostile no matter if it was alive or if it was just a string of data that was out to eat her mind and her soul. It was more than likely the latter because there were no longer any players left here in this world except for those that held onto a part of it that they probably didn't wish to keep. It was a good question to ask, of course, why she did not move if she was so sure it could be something so dangerous. Did this female-type have a death wish or something?
There was a scoff suddenly, she had thought of something funny and she could not help but let the amusement escape through her throat. Her gentle noise broke the silence of the field like a gunshot but it was not too long until the sound of the waves crashing against the island was the soundtrack to the scenery around her. DX, in her mind, counted backwards from the number ten as if she was so sure something was going to happen to her when she finally reached zero!
It turns out...

Maybe if he had a gun in hand, his finger would have slipped onto that trigger. But he held nothing in his palms, his movements were disjointed and not very calculated. He blinked lightly, letting the lids of his eyes raise in contemplation. It was like the first time he really noticed that he wasn't alone, perhaps he was startled that there was another noise present. Something to distinguish there was life outside of complete static and bullshit. Alexei really looked at the female now, expecting to see someone else; a person he waited for. And when he realized the dead garb lady was no where near colorful, he lost all interest again. Four months and he should have been used to expecting disappointment day after day.
Alexei stopped caring about a lot of things. Mainly his existence. If he even recognized what loneliness felt like, he may have tried to initiate something with the Dark Queen. But he kept a filter that didn't allow emotions to trickle in. Too many players had caught his attention, his heart, and ran away with it – mirth and all. So he turned his body and continued forward, perhaps he would find a spot on one of the swings at the park near by. Maybe he would sit there and stare at the ground in contemplation, wondering why, a question that remained incomplete and unanswered.
Perhaps if the woman's life sounded like dub step, he would have been jarred and might have gone crazy. Instead, the crackling noise, and off did his feet take him. It was a strange thing to walk with no intention of stopping anywhere.

It was always easier to walk away from something or someone than to actually do something or say something, it was true for both the real world and for the online world as well. DX couldn't help but roll her eyes underneath her lids at the thought of the nonsensical situation she had found herself in with another player (which she can safely assume is the case that she has without actually seeing who it was or what it was that was near by).
DX however twisted her body, turning from her back onto her side whilst moving her arm away from her face at the same time. For a moment she thought that staring at the back rest of the bench was a good idea, she thought looking through the gaps and into that lovely blue water would have been a smart thing to do. It was a beautiful sight, it was one she hardly ever got to see normally, these were things that everyone should make the most of! Who really cared at the time what in the world that other individual, that other individual she did not even know who it was, wanted in [The World] and what they were doing in the same field as her anyhow!
DX thought to herself how great it would be if [The World] burned right down to the ground with her still inside of it. Would anything really happen to her physical body back in the real world if such an event really did occur? If the servers went down and she were still inside of that virtual reality in the chewed up state it was in then would it take her down with it? Where did she even come up with those ideas anyways?

Alexei stopped walking and moved his head back to stare into the sky, since the red in his eyes was so overpowering – he had nothing of a beautiful gaze, there was no blue hues or white stars in his eyes. There was only the color red, like a rose, like love and death. Maybe if he had a top hat, he would remove it and give the world adieu. But there was nothing he had to offer. If this was a critique on his character, an audience would spew about how he had internalized suffering and loss. That he was apart of some tragic play that was titled [The World]. Perhaps there was a wake up call, or maybe it was because he wasn't really all there.
Static could drive a person insane. Almost like a parody on the banana song if it was consistent enough. He turned to look over his shoulder now, glancing at the female who made no notion to interact with him. It wasn't like he needed or thrived on anyone's attention, but the passage of time meant nothing. He immortalized a memory, a girl, and was prepared to die with some guilt buried in his chest. His character glitched for a second, the place that he stood empty.
Then, just like a blinking eye, he was there behind the bench. He placed both of his hands upon the upper part area that supported a person's back. Curling his fingers inward he leaned over to look at the female, really acknowledging that he wasn't alone and that she was not a trained NPC. Because if she were, she would have given Alexei a mechanical response.
'Good day, sir!'
His stare upon the female was intense, but since she was on her side; she may have not even noticed.

DX kept her calm and collected composure and she continued to lay there on her side with her eyes shut gently behind those pale lids of theirs. Her breathing was slow and deep as if she were trying to put her own body into hibernation! [The World] was a shadow of its former self, a reality that was slowly falling apart and into the deepest pits of madness that would reach out and infect all that remained. [The World] was toxic, it was infectious, it was absolutely dangerous! It plagued the hearts and the minds of those who continued to ensue their adventure in the depths of this surreal hell and it only ever took the lives of those who were new and naive to such a burden to existence. How many people had lost their bodies and their lives only to be stuck in this now collapsing void of nothing?
Not enough.
DX could feel someone's stare drilling through her back, tearing through her spine and puncturing a hole through her lungs only to seize her heart! It was a brutal stare, one that she felt all around her and deep inside of her, one that was asking of her things that she truly didn't wish to give; they were things that she no longer had to give! It was an intriguing feeling, she thought it had to be a somewhat interesting person to instill such a feeling deep inside of her without having to do a single thing! DX thought to herself in that moment that the game she was in might be getting to her head, that the viral atmosphere that slowly encroached all of [The World] was beginning to make its home inside of her head. It wouldn't surprise DX if that were the case, it wouldn't surprise her at all, it was clear by her avatar that she had spent much too long inside of this wasteland.

The longer he stared, the less of the avatar in front of him made sense. Perhaps the tiny speckles of color flashed over some broken terminal, and his stare became foggy. Eventually, the eyes produced a watery glaze – in which, caused the male to blink. He couldn't handle the darkness blinding what little color [The World] had left. Releasing the bench be pushed himself back, stood up straight and turned using the back of his heel. Whatever. There was a small smile on his face, his person dripping back into some other level of consciousness. Neither here nor there. Alexei moved onward, forward, back to the line of rocks that led out into the water. He never really tried to breech the 'end of [The World]' but he imagined data never quite had any. At least, data didn't die, people did.
He took a step up onto the nearest rock before shifting his legs so that he could kneel down. Lifting his hands for a second, he looked at them in contemplation. He hated this model and knew he discarded it for a reason. Alexei had become fond of the person who covered his dark soul in ultra beautiful blues. Dipping his right hand into the water then, he expected that he could regain his old composure back. But nothing happened. He couldn't turn the water into ice.
A sigh came from him, and his lids shut completely as he let his entire body slip into the shallow waters head first. From someone else's point of view, he was a corpse on the shore line.

The sound of the surface of water being broken by a heavy object flowed into her ears with much curiosity falling through behind it. Could it have been a creature from the depths of the sea slowly coming up and out of its dormant dwelling to eat DX whole? Were bodies falling out of the sky? Could it have been that the birds that flew in air were dropping dead? In her mind, somewhere deep inside of it, she could imagine their feathery corpses twirling down from the skies above only to bounce off the sharp edges of the rocks before sinking into the waters below. That would be one way to ruin the peaceful and serene nature of this field!
The urge to get up and move was becoming prevalent, it was an urge that she was slowly becoming unable to fight off. There was a force in this field that would soon come to swallow her whole, she could foresee such an event transpiring with all of the foreign energy building up inside of her. DX was reacting, she was reacting to something or someone that should not be there, reacting in ways that she truly could not comprehend at the time. DX didn't really think much of it, not to such an in-depth and scientific way, but she knew something was going on within her core!
Fight it.

Like many bodies in the water faced down, his dark hair sprawled outwards and flowed as if drenched yarn. Since he was still alive, there wasn't any stillness. Not quite yet. He just kept his body down, feeling his chest and pelvis against the jagged bottom of the shore. With the meager waves, his body swayed back and forth. His right hand went into the bottom of the shallow waters, his fingers grasping at the grainy texture. He could feel sharp material dig into his palm, most possibly shells and discarded items that were meant to jar any advanced player. What he did notice was that the water was much lower than his own body temperature. It had nothing to do with oxygen but he sank his knees downward into the water, shifting his upper body out.
He kept his head bowed so that his drenched hair would cover the upper half of his face.
At least he knew he was still alive.

It was a peculiar thing to be stuck in the position that DX was in, lost somewhere between the wanting urge to lay there and disappear into the background and the need to get up and do something with herself. Conflict, internal and external, orbited around DX's existence threatening to throw her off of her own axis with due time. It would be too easy for one foreign object, one speeding meteor, to come crashing right on into her to throw her into the deepest and darkest parts of space where she would never ever be found! How likely of a chance would that be? DX pondered to herself in that moment if she would ever have to worry about anything like that or if she were even that close to the edge at all! She didn't give her mind the time to think about it in the least, she dismissed the thought as more sounds of movement from the water's edge slipped into her ear.
