Set in a corner of The World, bordered by water on all sides, is a small island in the shape of a perfect square. Within the square is what one would recognize as a park, street lamps dotting the entire field sporadically. There is a playground, a set of swings, everything you could ever imagine a kid would want when their mother or father takes them to the park. There is even a food stand that sells whatever it is you wish for, no money required either! The water around the square is crystal clear as far as the eye can see, in the distance is a coast of some busy metropolitan area; while swimming around in the water is accessible, reaching the horizon in the distance is not. At night, there are very few places on the square that are in complete darkness. Perhaps there is some hidden evil within these dark and empty places?

[LOGGING IN: USERNAME: TOMENATI_ ]
[LOADING... DELTA SERVER] [KEYWORDS: SOFT AGONIZING REMNANT_ ]
[LOADING... CHARACTER DESIGN] [LOADING... WORLD]
The gates chimed softly, sliding up and down over a slowly forming user; Tomenati to be exact. His design was loaded fully and the golden rings disappeared into the data stream from which they came. Once free to move about the young man stretched his long arms above his head and tilted his head from left to right and back again. He felt a bit like the genie from Aladdin emerging from it's lamp; 10,000 years it's been and I'm finally waking up. To be honest he wasn't sure exactly how long it had been since he last step foot into the virtual game. Too long, but for good reason. It wasn't until recently when he had received and email containing a code to allow him access once again into the newly revamped World had he ever considered returning, and even then it took himself convincing.
A step forward. It was like he had never been gone. Tomi inhaled deeply, the slight breeze from the surrounding water blowing the half of his turquoise blue hair not pulled back into a ponytail across his face slightly. What a place he had found himself in. His eye drunk in the crystal clear water and the bustling metropolis in the distance. The arms once above his head had returned to his sides, hands hiding in his pockets now, as the boy made his way to the edge of the island, cobble stones crunching softly beneath his shoes as he did.
Tomenati had grown in real life since he last logged in and it reflected in his new character creation. He had kept small details, though; blue hair and eyes and the staff he had strapped across his back. The boyish teenage face had matured slightly with age but was unable to hide the same feelings for adventure and debauchery he'd held onto from his youth. Being here in this place was like releasing a flood gate of memories he had long since locked away.
"Wild.."
Tomenati spoke out loud to himself.

The sound of crunching noises coupled with feral sounds echoed in the emptiness of the field. What in The World could be making such uninviting sounds? Had this once quiet and tranquil field been overrun with viral coding? The source of the sound came from a dark corner of the field where no light appeared to shine upon, as if night itself existed in the particular spot. Within the shadows of the abyss was a figure crouching upon a tower of trash, two limbs picking up and putting garbage into its mouth without pause. It was difficult to make out if the entity was humanoid or not! It surely could not be a player character, could it? Not after so long, after The World had fallen into a state of archive. The crunching sounds only seem to grow up until a point where it almost seems to threaten the fragile stability of The World itself. Silence befalls the field for a few brief moments before a loud belch is released from the entity.
From the shadows came a particular female whose raven hair matched the darkness in which she had stepped out of and bright yellow eyes lanterns that pierced through the black into the light. Her clothing appears tattered from the elements with a left arm bandaged completely from shoulder to finger tips. From her lips hung bits of coding that remained from her feast as bored eyes scan the environment before her. Those yellow pools would befall the crystal clear body of water that surrounds the platform in which she stands on unknowingly with another. Like the famous living dead, she slowly walks over towards the edge without a word as if the sole purpose of her existence was to become one with the water below.

Tomenati's solitude on the platform was broken suddenly by a disturbance in the air around him. He could feel the shift in the game's code as the other entity manifested not too far from him. It was an intoxicating feeling, one Tomi thought he'd never feel again, and yet it caused a lump to form in his throat. His body froze and he heard nothing but his own heart beat thumping loudly in his ears. Time felt frozen, like he had stood there for hours even though moments had passed. How could this even be happening? Tomi had watched several interviews in real life of the game developers for The World boastfully claiming they had made it impossible for any kind of viral entity to make it's way into the servers any more. It had been series of long days and nights of questioning and solitude when Tomenati awoke from his coma, after all he willingly allowed himself to be a tool for a bigger mechanism to unveil the weakness in, well, everything.
The reality of the present rushed back unto him as Tomenati turned his head toward the girl who now stood at the edge of platform. She sauntered hauntingly slow and had a very focused yet mesmerized looked in her eyes. Tomenati's heart skipped a beat as he took in the girl's features. It was familiar. Something about her—everything about her was like something from a foggy dream. He focused on the visible code dripping from her lips and then her profile then down to her arm wrapped in bandages. How long had he been staring? Tomi couldn't speak, though. Even though she felt familiar he could still feel in the pit of his stomach something screaming at him to back away. But even that discourse with himself felt natural, like he had picked up his favorite book and continued reading where he once left off.
"H-hello?"
The words fell from his lips hesitantly and the teenager in him slammed his fists on Tomi's chest begging him to back away.

The body of the female would come to cease immediately as another voice rang out in the field that broke the absolute silence. It really was as if The World had frozen in that particular moment, the long raven hair that trailed behind the female had frozen in place without settling. It would feel as if it could have been an entire lifetime but only a moment would pass before the figure before him would glitch out of existence only to reappear before him. With her back facing the male and a head that casually but immediately looks over her shoulder, it is as if her initial actions had continued to play out and yet position in the field had been the only immediate change the glitch would bring. "Huh?"
Lopper's yellow eyes would widen in panic as she found someone standing right behind her who had not been there before! "Aaaaah!" Lopper screams, turning around and flailing as she stumbles backwards only to fall onto her rear end in a comical way. "Ugh," she mutters as her right hand reaches behind her to rub at her lower spine. "That really hurt! What's the big idea, Tomo!?" Lopper huffs, muttering words inaudible to the male as she leans over towards the ground as if contemplating resting upon her side. "When did you pick up this awful trait of yours?" Looking up at Tomenati, expecting a response, it is in those moments that those eyes appear to shift slightly in a sense of confusion. "Huh? You look different." Lopper thinks out loud, canting her head with some thought. "What is with your change? You trying to impress someone, aren't you?!" Lopper bursts out into laughter, slapping the floor with her right hand. "Jeez! Who did you meet between yesterday and today?!" Lopper looks up at Tomenati with a wide and toothy grin, waiting for a response.

The girl clumsily fell before Tomenati. It caused him to step back in shock. She went from being stoic and rigid to almost human-like. His head cocked to the side as she rubbed her lower spine in pain. This sudden change in demeanor was very unexpected and it sent the boy into a temporary state of confusion until his consciousness caught up with his being. She teased him and began to laugh, awaiting a response from the boy. When the familiar nick name left her lips it immediately rang in his ears. Who was she? Why was she more than familiar with him. There was little to no chance he'd actually every run into someone from the past, right? His eyes fell to her toothy grin and then back up to her eyes all in a matter of moments and it was then he felt like he had been hit with falling piano.
"Lopper?"
Saying the name out loud made it real. Tomenati's eyes widened and his lungs filled with air. His mental puzzle was connected and everything about the unshaken feeling of familiarity made sense.
"Lopper!"
Tomi said again a little louder as he stepped forward and reached down to help her to her feet. Why was his heart racing? Why did he want to run and hide? Why was she here? How could she still be here? So many questions raced endlessly through the boy's brain. It all ceased through when what she had said last caught up with his stream of consciousness.
"What do you mean 'yesterday and today'? "

Without hesitation, Lopper reaches forward to take the extended hand that Tomenati offered to stand back upon her own two feet proper. "You are such a gentlemen," she teased before taking in a deep breath. "We were just talking the other day, in the field full of mushrooms!" Lopper extends her arms up towards the sky, to gesture towards the tall mushrooms in which she is referring to. "You were so sad and dramatic, speaking of how 'all good things come to an end' or something!" Lopper huffs, brushing her ragged clothing off from the invisible dust she had gathered when she had fallen on the ground out of surprise. "Is your memory that bad, Tomo? Focus!"
Lopper looks over her shoulder at the water once more, quiet for a moment as she allows for thought to enter her mind. "I was about to head for a swim! Did you want to come with?" Lopper excitingly turns back around to face Tomo with a bright and inviting smile. "The water is crystal clear and looks absolutely refreshing! You cannot say no, can you!?" Clasping her hands together before extending both of her arms towards the body of water as if she were trying to sell it to the male with her bright smile and girlish charm. "Come on, Tomo! You can be weird later!"

He watched her. Every movement Lopper made was slowed down to his vision. Tomi was letting everything about her soak into his memories. Apart of him thought this was a dream and he'd wake up at any second. Her words finally hit him fully after she had finished brushing the dirt from her clothing. Mushrooms? Tomi racked his brain as far back as he could but having been in a coma made it all very difficult, especially this far removed from the incident.
"My memory's not-"
He began to protest softly but Lopper cut him off with the invitation. All he could do was blink and stand almost awkwardly before the girl. This was all happening so quickly and suddenly. Tomi wasn't prepared to face a situation like this or even similarly by any means. Tomi was so used to knowing what to say and how to act. He was charming and put together but not in this instance. Lopper was in the driver's side and Tomi was along for the ride. As she motioned to the water his gaze followed out to the crystal clear waters surrounding their location. Lopper wasn't wrong. It looked refreshing and Tomi was always drawn to the water, in every form. The two of them together often found themselves in places with bodies of water or constant rain. He turned his head back to her just in time for the full effect of the girlish smile to hit him. Another thump from his heart in his ears.
"Right."
Tomi responded and the nodded more affirmatively to her proposition. He could let the abruptness of their reunion and strangeness of her apparent timeframe disconnect affect him later. This was Lopper after all. The only girl who could make him feel the way he did and challenge him in ways no one ever did. Why throw a wrench into the machine.
"Let's go for a swim."
The corner of his mouth upturned into his signature charming smirk as he followed behind her toward the water.

"Wonderful!" Lopper exclaims with an animated cheer with laughter that echos throughout the the empty field. Turning her attention back towards the water with a slow head that leads the rest of her body onto target, her casual stride begins to walk her towards the edge of the platform. "I am glad these things never change," spoke a soft voice with a deep breath of the fresh air that carried the smell of the water in which the two of them were closing in upon. "Can't you agree, Tomo?" Briefly did Lopper look over her shoulder, one of her eyes piercing through her hair that fell over her face messily like a curtain to look back at the familiar male.
At the water's edge, Lopper slows her feet to a pause where the jagged rocks raised from the depths below against the elevated platform. Lowering herself into a crouching position with eyes that stare fondly into the water below her, Lopper hums a soft tune while watching the light from the sky above refract off the surface of the water in which she loves so. "Tomo, did you know?" Lopper leads with a rhetorical question, not turning back to face her ally. "The sea, it gives love the opportunity to make it appear more than it truly is."

As Tomenati followed Lopper all he could think about was this very same action but all those years ago. It had really always been Tomi following her around; he'd follow her to the gates of hell. It didn't seem like time changed that instinct at all. As she crouched closer to the water Tomenati opted to stand beside her at the edge of the platform, losing himself in the view of the water reaching out to the metropolis in the distance. It's surface refracted every ounce of light that shone upon it. He was getting lost in his own thoughts as he fixated on the gentle waves out further in the body the water. As Lopper spoke, however, Tomi broke from the water and looked down at the familiar girl. As she spoke Tomi found it still difficult to comprehend immediately what she was actually saying. He'd never thought he'd hear her voice again; see her lips move. Yet here he was as if time never moved on and nothing ever changed. It caused him to chuckle out loud but more to himself than anything, turning his gaze back to the water.
"I never... really thought about it like that. But you've always been more of the philosopher than me, Lopper."
He shed himself of the staff on his back and the boots on his feet. Bringing his arms above his head once again Tomenati inhaled deeply.
"But the same can be said about a lot of things, don't you think?"
Looking at her once more Tomenati smiled softly.
"Come on then."
Tomenati then dove out and into the water below them. He cut through it with ease, the water moving around him, forming to his movements, as he dipped back up toward the surface. Breaking the surface Tomi immediately pushed his hair from his eyes and looked at her, wading and bobbing with the water.

The sound of Tomenati's body hitting the water disturbed the peaceful quiet that fell over the field for but an instant. Lopper brings a hand to her countenance to wipe gently at drops of water that had landed upon her face. The particular female shared no words in return to Tomenati and his verbose thinking, her yellow eyes narrowing at his person wading in the water. Standing straight up, Lopper kicks her own footwear from her feet onto the platform in which she stands on carelessly. It would only be a few more moments before Lopper would jump in after Tomenati in the same manner in which he had, submerged under water until surfacing by his side. With hair desperately clinging upon her own face, she blows fruitlessly up at it to push it to the side where it truly belongs. "Yeah, this is nice!" Lopper says suddenly, once she realizes she had spent too much time trying to fix the hair that sticks to her face. "I always have the best ideas! Don't I, Tomo?" Lopper laughs briefly before scanning the waters around her in silence. Was she looking for something or simply admiring the view?

His eyes followed Lopper as she followed suit into the crystal clear sea. Everything seemed so effortless for her. Maybe it was the rust caked on him from having not set foot in The World, it all feeling new despite how familiar his surroundings were. It could've also been how connected to the game he once was. He hadn't been a player existing in a virtual world, having to clunk about and adapt to his environment. It was all so fluid when The World molded to his own person. Tomi moved with the endless steam of code rather than against it, like he felt now. When she emerged from below the surface the boy made his way over closer to her.
"You could say that. 'Best ideas' might not be the terminology I would use but it was never a repeat experience."
Tomenati couldn't help but chuckle softly as he fixated on her. It definitely was never the same experience twice whenever the two crossed paths. Fighting monsters one moment and each other the next. They had both been consumed by the virus inside of them, it always causing their meetings to be unpredictable depending on how the other one felt in that moment but they always came back to one another. The boy bobbed gently up and down with the movements of the waves, now once again in silence. He let the sounds of the water take him away from reality, eyes closing slowly.

Lopper would not let Tomenati drift into his own mind if she could help it! Playfully does the female splash water in the male's direction. "Hey! Do not sleep while swimming! You could die, you know!" Lopper huffs, bringing a hand to wipe upward against her face to finally move the hair that had been clinging to her countenance. "There is something very different about you," Lopper hums in thought as she studies her ally who does not appear as familiar as he once did moments before. "Where is this mature act of yours coming from?" Lopper tilts her head curiously, studying Tomenati. "Is something the matter? Did I say something wrong?"

He was suddenly splashed by the girl. It pulled him out of his head and caused his eyes to shoot open. Wiping the excess water from his face Tomi laughed and met his eyes with hers. Her words caused the playful smirk to fall from his face, however. How could she be so unaware of just how much time had passed between their final encounter. Tomi could admit the exact amount of time is always blurry for him considering how long it took for him to awaken from his coma. But he did wake up as did everyone else he had locked away in The World. She should've woke up as well, especially after the game was shut down temporarily.
"No! No no, Lopper. You haven't said anything wrong. You've said some pretty heavy shit before but nothing ever wrong, you know that."
Tomenati didn't even know where to begin with trying to figure out exactly where in her mind she was. His bottom lip tucked itself behind his top row of teeth as Tomi chewed it gently. It was another few moments of silence, the sounds of the waves hitting the platform being the only noise filling the area.
"How... old am I, Lopper?"
